The Patrick Administration announced bids have been awarded under an aggressive timeline for the first five “shovel-ready” transportation projects using federal highway stimulus funds under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The bid process moved quickly and proved cost effective. Bids were opened, awards made, and a “notice to proceed” issued just five weeks after the projects were advertised for bid. Construction on all projects is expected to begin in the next two weeks.
In four of the five projects, the awarded bid came in below the original estimated cost. Awarded bids in those four projects range from 2.7% to as much as 16.4% below estimate. In all five projects the bidder with the lowest project cost was awarded the bid. The total cost of all five projects represents an overall 5% savings.
The first five projects with estimated total value of $11.5 million represent road resurfacing and traffic sign replacement in the following locations:
• Adams- Route 116
• Bourne- Route 6 (Scenic Highway)
• Bridgewater-Middleborough- Route 18 & Route 28
• Lexington-Reading- Route 128 (I-95), Sign Replacement
• Swansea- Route 6
More than $153.2 million will be committed to “shovel-ready” projects advertised for bid within the next 120 days.
