During groundbreaking ceremonies, Transportation Secretary James A. Aloisi Jr. and Pittsfield Mayor James M. Ruberto announced the award of a $1.2 million Public Works Economic Development (PWED) Grant to the City of Pittsfield for a road reconstruction project that will improve traffic flow and pedestrian accessibility in the downtown area.

The PWED project for roadway and sidewalk improvements on North Street from Park Square to the Columbus Avenue/Eagle Street intersection is adjacent to the city’s new downtown Intermodal Transportation center.
The Executive Office of Transportation also announced the start of three MassHighway projects that complement the city’s efforts in the immediate area. The projects totaling $4.4 million will reconstruct Park Square, upgrade the streetscape along South Street including sidewalks, and add new traffic signals, sidewalks and widened approaches on South Street and Housatonic Street.
