Transportation Secretary James Aloisi, Jr. visited Lawrence to announce the Patrick-Murray Administration's reconstruction of the Route 28 (Broadway Street) bridge over the Merrimack River as part of the historic eight-year, $3 billion Accelerated Bridge Program.
The $10.3 million project involves complete reconstruction of the bridge, including new concrete deck and repair of the existing structural steel. The work will be performed in three stages with one lane of traffic opened in each direction and one sidewalk open at all times for pedestrians. The project is scheduled for completion in November 2011.
The Broadway (Edward O’Leary) Bridge was built in 1935. Its granite abutments date to 1882, when an iron truss bridge was constructed to replace the Andover Bridge, a wood-frame covered bridge built in 1848 and destroyed by fire in 1881.
The Accelerated Bridge Program will expedite the repair and replacement of Massachusetts bridges in the most urgent need, reducing by at least 250 the number of structurally-deficient bridges by 2016. The program will create thousands of engineering and construction jobs and provide long term savings in avoided inflation and deferred maintenance costs.
