Approximately 1,800 high school students from across the Commonwealth will learn about careers in the construction, engineering, and environmental industries during the 7th annual Construction Career Days Event held May 5-7, 2009, at the New England Laborer’s Training Academy in Hopkinton.
MassHighway joins other state and federal government representatives along with construction industry and trades groups in sponsoring the three-day event, designed to show students that construction-related careers are rewarding– whether their interests lie in math, carpentry, mechanics or science.
"We are pleased to join our government and industry partners in sponsoring this outstanding career exploration opportunity for hundreds of high school students," said Commissioner Luisa Paiewonsky. "As we rebuild our transportation infrastructure across the Commonwealth in the coming years, there will be significant need for construction trades workers, engineers, and skilled employees to fill challenging positions. This career exploration event can provide the crucial spark that helps a young person make a positive choice about his or her future."
Other sponsors of the Career Days Event include the Federal Highway Administration, Construction Industries of Massachusetts, Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, New England Laborers, Massachusetts Aggregate and Asphalt Pavement Association, Massachusetts Concrete and Aggregate Producers Association, and the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section/ASCES.
This hands-on, interactive event offers high school juniors and seniors the opportunity under professional guidance to learn how to operate backhoes, excavators, jackhammers, pavers, and other equipment and participate in such tasks as concrete finishing, welding, carpentry, and field engineering.
