Transportation Secretary James A. Aloisi Jr. today announced the award of a $1.045 million Public Works Economic Development (PWED) grant for a roadway reconstruction and streetscape improvement project in New Bedford.
“This project will help support economic growth in downtown New Bedford,” said Secretary Aloisi. “It is a perfect example of the Patrick Administration’s commitment to regional equity and our goal of using transportation funds to support economic growth and vibrant communities.”
The project involves the roadway reconstruction on Wamsutta Street, Logan Street and Acushnet Avenue, including significant streetscape improvements. The project would revitalize the area around the former Wamsutta Mill, which has been converted to a 250-unit residential building. The $32 million project will be the anchor for other private investment in the 150-acre target area. The project area is near the proposed South Coast Rail project, which will provide commuter rail connections between New Bedford and Boston.
The Executive Office of Transportation (EOT) provides PWED grants to municipalities for transportation infrastructure improvements that will spur economic development, job creation, smart growth and better pedestrian access. Since 2000, EOT has awarded $99.6 million dollars of PWED contracts for 98 projects in 66 municipalities across the Commonwealth,leveraging hundreds of millions of dollars in private investment and creating thousands of local jobs.
