Turnpike: New Online Traffic Tools

 

The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority today unveiled new online services to help drivers track traffic conditions on the MassPike (I-90).  The new services are available just in time for the busy Memorial Day Weekend.

This year motorists will be able to track traffic hotspots at I-84, I-495, Weston and Allston tolls via an improved interactive Google Maps Traffic Cameras web page and a real-time traffic conditions web page at www.masspike.com.

The interactive Google Maps Traffic Cameras page monitors real-time, live traffic conditions in Boston and now has been improved to include the addition of five cameras from Allston to I-84, including the Exit 9 hotspot in Sturbridge.  In addition, the Roads Conditions page will report up-to-date traffic conditions in these new locations. 

Historically the heaviest Memorial Day MassPike traffic occurs Thursday, Friday and Monday afternoons and early evenings.  Motorists are urged to plan travel accordingly to avoid peak traffic volumes between 1 pm and 7 pm on those three days.  

The Turnpike toll plazas will be staffed to minimize traffic disruptions and inconvenience.  Toll managers will be on hand to monitor traffic conditions and to call in extra help if necessary.  Despite full staffing levels, traffic conditions at the toll plazas can be impacted by volume, weather conditions, accidents and traffic issues on adjoining roadways.

Compliments of McDonalds and Gulf, free coffee will be served at the 11 service plazas along the Turnpike on Monday night into Tuesday morning, from 10 pm to 5 am.

To save time, money and gas, motorists are encouraged to join FAST LANE.  Since the free transponder program began in mid-February more than 85,000 transponders have been distributed.

Please do something to allow users of car-sharing services (e.g. Zipcar) to obtain FastLane accounts. The current setup requires drivers to be tied to particular vehicles to register and use the system. Thus, those of us who car-share have no option but to pay cash and wait in the endless queues.
