Transportation Secretary James Aloisi joined MBTA General Manager Dan Grabauskas to celebrate the modernization of the Green Line's Arlington Station, now fully accessible and in compliance with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) following $22.7 million in upgrades.
Arlington Station has three new elevators, new head-houses and stairways, new columns, and new electrical throughout the station. Additional renovations include a new egress at Arlington Street church, and raised platforms to accommodate low floor Green Line vehicles.
The MBTA in 1989 initiated the Light Rail Accessibility Project to make the transit system accessible to all persons with disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that certain key stations be accessible. The MBTA Key Station Plan approved by the Federal Transit Administration includes 80 key stations that must be ADA compliant. Today, 77 MBTA key stations are in compliance including Arlington.
