Milton Bridge Repair Accelerated

In keeping with its “Laboratory of Innovation” approach to the Accelerated Bridge Program, the Massachusetts Highway Department has announced a new plan to compress the schedule for rehabilitating the Ponkapoag Trail bridge project in Milton ten months earlier than originally scheduled.  MassHighway, the contractor and town officials agreed to close the bridge to traffic from July 1 to December 24, allowing the contractor to complete the project by June 30, 2010, rather than the original April 2011 date.

MassHighway encourages its employees, contractors and designers who participate in the historic eight-year, $3 billion Accelerated Bridge Program to bring forward plans to reduce design, contracting and construction schedules and cut costs. The Ponkapoag Trail bridge project was originally designed for three stages of construction with one lane open northbound and southbound at all times. During the preconstruction phase of the project, RDA Construction proposed the single-stage project acceleration.

The Ponkapoag Trail bridge is one of several projects moving forward more quickly than first scheduled.

• Earlier this month, another Accelerated Bridge Program project, the Pleasant Street Bridge in Grafton, opened to traffic months earlier than the normal construction timeframe, thanks to an innovative Design/Build streamlined construction process.
• The Route 28 bridge over Route 213 in Methuen will be completed by spring 2010 in one year instead of the originally-scheduled two years, after MassHighway identified the opportunity to construct two temporary bridges instead of one because of a change in utility relocation.  
  

A total of 543 MassHighway and DCR bridges were structurally deficient at the onset of the Accelerated Bridge Program. That number was to have increased to nearly 700 by 2016.  The Accelerated Bridge Program will instead reduce the number of structurally-deficient bridges to approximately 450 while creating thousands of engineering and construction jobs and delivering long-term savings in avoided inflation and deferred maintenance costs.
