New England states are working together on a multi-state plan, including application for federal stimulus funds under the $8 billion High Speed and Intercity Rail initiative in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Recognizing the interdependency of our transportation systems, the New England states have come together responding to this challenge with a bold vision for rail in our region and commitment to work together to support our collective efforts.
Strengthening passenger and freight rail service in Massachusetts will connect urban areas, promote economic growth, move goods and people more efficiently, and support sustainable growth and livable communities.
The Massachusetts rail vision has identified more than $2.5 billion in projects along four major corridors, along with additional projects to support freight and commuter rail. The four include:
• Knowledge Corridor (Springfield to East Northfield)
• Inland Route (Springfield to Boston)
• South Coast Rail (Boston to Fall River & New Bedford)
• Downeaster Corridor (Boston to Portland, ME)
