Transportation Secretary and MBTA Board Chair James Aloisi, Jr. and Board members offered special honors during the October 8 final meeting of the MBTA Board to four outstanding commuter rail employees for actions that ensured the safety of hundreds of customers.
The four Massachusetts Bay Commuter Rail (MBCR) employees, holding commendations left to right in the photo, are Richard Murphy, Chief Train Dispatcher; John O'Malley, Dispatching Supervisor; Brandon Quaranto, Engineer; and Hensley Jean, Engineer.
On September 14 along the Worcester/Framingham Line, Dispatching Supervisor O'Malley and Chief Dispatcher Murphy observed that CSX Rail had dispatched an inbound commuter rail train and an outbound commuter rail train on the same track.
They immediately notified CSX. At the same moment, Engineers Jean and Quaranto realized their trains were on the same track. Both began braking their trains immediately, bringing the trains to a stop and avoiding a head-on collision. The awareness and rapid actions of the four prevented what could have been a catastrophic event. On behalf of all commuter rail customers, congratulations to these four.
