The bridge spanning the Mill River and providing the only access to several homes was in poor condition, not accessible to fire and emergency vehicles, and in danger of being closed.
A normal bridge replacement project would have required a temporary bridge or construction in stages.
MassDOT's Bridge staff worked with the Highway Division's District 1 to come up with an innovative plan to design and install a replacement bridge in less than 2 weeks. The plan used the existing bridge abutments and new steel beams but required a partnership between the Highway Division and the Town.
The Highway Division demolished the existing superstructure, capped the existing abutments and installed the new steel beams. Williamsburg did all the approach work including paving and guard rail and installed bridge rail and asphalt surface. The Town provided the trucks needed to move a temporary pedestrian bridge to the job site to maintain foot access to the homes during construction.
Work began on Monday October 19th and the bridge was ready for vehicle traffic just 11 days later, on Friday, October 30th. Learn more about MassDOT's Highway Division.
