MBTA Transit Police today announced serious crime on the T is at its lowest level in 30 years, with incidents down 21% in 2009 compared to the previous year.
Transit Police Chief Paul MacMillan said serious crimes dropped to their lowest levels since 1980. More than 370 million passenger trips were made on MBTA services last year, with the number of aggravated assaults falling to 88. There were no homicides. There were significant declines in larceny and theft.
Chief MacMillan credited the work of transit police officers and the success of public awareness campaigns in encouraging customers to take steps to avoid theft and report suspicious activity.
