The Massachusetts Coalition for Suicide Prevention today honored Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Company (MBCR) General Manager Richard A. Davey for his lead role in creating the Massachusetts Transportation Suicide Prevention Initiative, a partnership between MBCR, the MBTA and Samaritans, a Boston-based suicide prevention and education agency.
Davey, right, is joined at the Statehouse by John Cole, owner of Cole Creative, which designed the public awareness ads in stations.
The program, which seeks to prevent suicides on the railroad right of way, has been credited with saving at least two lives.
MBCR and the MBTA provide free space to Samaritans to advertise the group’s suicide prevention services at commuter rail and subway stations. Samaritans provides counseling services, including a 24-hour confidential hot line, to conductors and engineers who have witnessed a suicide and conducts workshops with new rail engineers who are likely to experience a suicide while operating a train.
