Thanks to the remarkable efforts of crews working around the clock since Tuesday, Green Line service through Newton will resume at approximately 2:30 today, in time for the afternoon/evening commute home.
In just 3 ½ days, work crews:
Pumped all the water out of the swimming
pool-sized hole
Installed a 125 foot, 18 inch in diameter, concrete drainage pipe to prevent wash-outs in the future
Erected a retaining wall comprised of concrete blocks
Re-built the earthen rail bed beneath the tracks
Restored power to the overhead wires and tested the signal system and tracks
Visit MBTA on the web.

And thanks for all the updates. Posting detailed and timely information for the riding public -- what a concept! Good work all around.

Another note of thanks to the MBTA. This was stressful all around, but was handled appropriately and quickly and most of all safety was of top concern. Thank you to all involved for getting us back up and running within a weeks time.

This emergency repair was very well executed; resources were effectively and efficiently used. Well done, MBTA and MassDOT. I hope to see standard projects move this well in the future while under the DOT. Again, well done.

Congratulations to the T for managing this entire ordeal so effectively--not only fixing the track in record time, but making the inconvenience of busing less onerous by having so many staff on hand to help riders navigate the buses.

Thanks very much to the construction crew for completing this job quickly. Everyone's appreciation should also go out to the train operator identified the problem, stopped her train, and notified the MBTA. If it had not been for her attentiveness, we could have had a real tragedy on our hands.
