Residents and drivers should take note that roadways and rail service Southeastern MA have been heavily impacted by this storm. In addition, continued rainfall, flooding and water on the roadways can be expected to cause delays in throughout Eastern Massachusetts during the evening commute. A detailed list of road closures is below.
We are experiencing flooding on local state roadways throughout Southeastern Massachusetts where the storm was heaviest this morning. In particular, portions of Route 24 are already impacted by the flooding.
River flooding has suspended commuter rail and Amtrak service between Providence, RI and South Attleboro stations – buses are currently being used to shuttle passengers between the two stations. We do not expect train service to resume between those two stations for the evening commute.
In preparation for the evening commute, drivers should expect the evening commute may take longer due to the rain and localized flooding throughout the Commonwealth as the rain continues to fall. Commuters are urged to travel safely, plan ahead, ride public transit when possible, and seek alternative routes if necessary. In particular, commuters should expect delays, closures and detours throughout Southeastern Massachusetts and should leave plenty of time for travel.
As of this update, flooding had caused the closure of the left lane on I-95 north and south in Waltham by Route 20. It has since REOPENED.
The MBTA continues to monitor its system closely, particularly at the Muddy River where the water level is currently rising. If the level of the Muddy River rises to 15’ then the MBTA will need to build a dam in front of the portal to the Green Line D branch tunnel.
Route 119 will remain closed for up to two weeks as crews work to replace a collapsed culvert at Spectacle Pond. After bringing in large capacity pumps from out-of-state over the weekend we expect to be pumping 64,000 gallons of water a minute to alleviate local flooding conditions that are impacting local drinking water wells and prevent the road from being undermined.
MassDOT is providing space and equipment at its Lexington Depot and other depots in the state to allow the National Guard to stage its sandbagging operations.
DETAILED SUMMARY OF LOCALIZED ROAD IMPACTS:
Soldiers Field Road at Brighton Circle is closed between Brooks Street and Parsons Street.
Nonantum Road in Watertown is closed between Galen Street and Charlesbank Road.
Alewife Brook Parkway on the Arlington/Cambridge line is closed between Massachusetts Avenue and Route 2.
Lynn Fells Parkway in Melrose is closed between Melrose Street and Tremont Street.
Waltham - Flooding had caused the closure of the left lane on I-95 north and south in Waltham by Route 20. It is now reopened.
Freetown - Route 24 Northbound & Southbound High Speed lanes flooded and closed
Fall River - Route 24 Northbound and Southbound closed between I-195 and Exit 5 (President Ave)
Middleboro - Route 28 near the Log Cabin Restaurant - road flooded though cars getting by. Drive slowly.
Middleboro - Route 105 Southbound one lane closed at Route I-495 overpass
Lakeville - Route 18 along Assawampset Pond (between Highland Road and main St intersections). Road flooded but cars getting by. Drive slowly.
Holbrook - Route 37 between Quincy St and South St. Road flooded and detoured.
Raynham - Route 138 near Great American Pub (North of Route I-495). Road flooded cars getting through. Drive slowly.
Wrentham - Route 1 Northbound north of Thurston Street. Drivers should be aware water rushing down to roadway but basins draining water.
Taunton - Route 44 road flooding near Taunton River - Route 44 detoured at Long Meadow Rd Eastbound in Taunton and South Street in Raynham westbound
Dighton - Route 138 at Muddy Cove - detour Hart St to Elm St to Main St back to Route 138 - road flooded and detoured
Somerset - Route 138 at Buffington St - police detouring around the flooded road
Westport - Route 6 Eastbound & Westbound at Bread and Cheese Brook flooded over road - detour being implemented around this area
Uxbridge - Rte 146A Southbound at Mill St., water is over the top of the road
Wayland - Rte 20 Eastbound at Rte 27 - Closed. Rte 27 is open in both directions, at least through the evening commute.
Holliston - Rte 16, closed one mile east of Milford town line
Littleton - Route 119 remains in Littleton closed due to a failed culvert. MassDOT crews and contractors are working around the clock and coordinating with local emergency personnel to rebuild the culvert, seen above.
Concord Turnpike in Concord closed at the junctions of Routes 2 and 2A
Swansea - Route 195 Eastbound at exit 3 closed
NOW OPENED - Canton - Ramp 138 Southbound to 93 Southbound

That Section of I-93 Was Patched 2 Weeks ago but the Heavy Rain has Reopened the Potholes. Also that section of I-93 will undergo a $9 Million Resurfacing Project Starting this Summer.

Today...
I-93 Soutbound 35.2 Mile Marker (Tewksbury/Wilmington MA). MASSIVE pothole in the middle lane takes out my tire. Flat (a hole in the tread section). I look to the right and see 5 tow-trucks on the side of the road just after the pothole helping other cars ....wrecked. (Luckily I have TPMS that alerted me that my tire was hit too and I pulled over safely and awaited help.)
I called 911 and they say "we know about it we are trying to get MassDOT to send someone". I say negligent - BOTH MassDOT and Mass State Police. If anyone was injured between the time it took the first tow truck to arrive to that scene and my call to 911 at 7:28pm, it would be negligence on both parties.
Last year they patched I-93 every few days. This year - never. I guess they spent all the $$ on the resurfacing down in the Medford area. SAD
In a first world country like Germany ...."Crews inspect every square meter of the system periodically using vehicles with high-tech road scanning equipment.
