Later this month, MassDOT’s Accelerated Bridge Program will be holding two public information meetings for Boston bridge replacement projects.
Project: Morton St. Bridge Replacement over MBTA & CSX (B-16-163)
Date & time: 6:30 PM Tuesday, March 23
Project: River St. Bridge Replacement over MBTA & CSX (B-16-167)
Date & time: 6:30 PM Thursday, March 25
Both meetings will be held at the Mildred Avenue Community Center, 5 Mildred Ave., Mattapan.
These projects are good candidates for the use of heavy lift construction methods which can reduce construction impacts on traffic and local businesses by dramatically reducing the amount of time it takes to construct bridges. Heavy lifting equipment can be used to carry a bridge span (built in a nearby, off-site area) to the project location. This enables major portions of construction to occur off-site, where it will not cause traffic delays. In fact, the portion of the site work that will impact traffic is the actual move of the bridge, which causes days (rather than months or years) of impact.
A video shows a bridge being moved into place using one of the heavy lift methods.
At each of the public information meetings, MassDOT will provide project information including the possible use of heavy lift methods to accelerate construction. We will also gather public comments and answer any questions you might have. I encourage you to attend and participate. Find information about upcoming project public hearings here.
