At the Governor’s direction, the RMV is rescinding the $5 counter fee that went into effect yesterday. In response to the difficult economic situation and a declining budget the RMV has responded to a rising demand in services by expanding its online transactions at www.mass.gov/rmv.
The proposed fee was meant in part to encourage more people to visit the RMV’s website to complete transactions rather than visiting a branch. The Registrar understands the Governor’s concern that the fee would have unduly burdened residents and is working to rescind the fee immediately.
Going online saves residents time and it saves the RMV money. In the last year, the RMV added eight new online services at www.mass.gov/rmv bringing the total to 23 online services. Before going to a branch, MassDOT encourages residents to check to see if they can do their business online. It saves money and time!

If I get commercial plates in October are they good till the next October, or will I have to pay for plates in January again?

The answer is: If the vehicle is 5,000lbs or less (gross vehicle weight rating) the registration expires at the end of December the following year. If the vehicle weighs over 5,000lbs (gross vehicle weight rating) the registration expires at the end of December of the same year.

I have a one ton truck, 6 wheels. It's not a work truck. I don't have a business. Why do I have to pay $200 for commercial plates every year.

Above it states "Going online saves residents time and it saves the RMV money" Why do you add a $3.00 fee to on line transactions.
==========================================
RMV Responds: We don't add a transaction fee. It costs the same to renew a registration, for example, at a branch, by mail or online. If you have further questions about this, please let us know.

I mailed in $55.00 as stated on the front of the registration renewal form, only to find it should have been $50.00. Will I receive a refund?
=========================================
YES, RMV is sending $5 refunds to those who paid $55.

What if we went to the RMV on 3/1? Are we entitled to a refund or reimbursement??
===============================
Yes. The RMV will refund the branch counter fee to any customer who paid it. We are in the process of identifying those customers and will be mailing refund checks to them within the next two weeks. Customers do not have to fill out forms or call the phone center to claim the refund.
