Mass Ave Bike Lane Announced

MassDOT Secretary Jeff Mullan joined Boston Transportation Commissioner Tom Tinlin and other City officials at the Mayor's Bike Week Festival on City Hall Plaza, left, to announce that the City and State have developed a solution that will allow for 5' bike lanes on the Massachusetts Avenue project currently underway. 

Over the past months, MassDOT, the designer and the City of Boston worked collaboratively and in coordination with bicycle advocates to examine possible solutions and to develop this preferred solution.  The Federal Highway Administration was a key partner in approving the new plan quickly. 

Including a bike lane as part of the Mass Ave project was a priority of Mayor Menino as well as Governor Patrick, who heard from constituents about the importance of the Mass Ave bike lane issue for bikers in Boston.  The Governor is proud of the swift action and positive solution celebrated today.

Increasing bicycle and pedestrian travel is one of the priorities of MassDOT's Healthy Transportation Compact, available on the web.

Today also wraps up Bay State Bike Week, a statewide series of events to promote bicycling.

We've worked non stop the past two years to advocate for these bike lanes. We know first hand that Secretary Mullan and Administrator Paiewonsky share our passion and commitment to help make our streets more accommodating for ALL users. Chief Engineer Tramontozzi and Deputy Chief Engineer DiPaolo also deserve recognition for their willingness to meet, to listen and share ideas, and to help make the right thing happen.
