MassDOT and the City of New Bedford announced an informal design competition for a new station near Route 18 to be known as Whale’s Tooth. The multi-modal station will be built as part of the South Coast Rail project and may host a new local and intercity bus terminal. The announcement was made in New Bedford City Hall by Mayor Scott W. Lang and Kristina Egan, Director of South Coast Rail, MassDOT.
In addition to holding a design contest, the City, MassDOT, and the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority have launched an initiative to identify ways to improve local bus service and provide service to the Whale’s Tooth station. Customer surveys are underway to gather information from riders and the larger public. Recommendations will be released next year in the first comprehensive report ever developed for the bus authority.
The contest poster and background information about the station site are posted on the project website, www.mass.gov/southcoastrail. Submissions are due on December 20, 2010, and must include one or two drawings or renderings and a description and rationale for the design.

This route will be approved and built, I wish my town of Stoughton would see the light and stop wasting our money, this project will be built.

This blog certainly contains precuios information. It’s really amazing how you have managed to collect all of them. The blog design looks good. But it seems as though you are cramping for space. Just create enough gaps between posts than it will look awesome.

What a shame the state is going full speed ahead to waste millions on a rail line that isn't needed. The South coast politicians are more than happy to help destroy communities along the rail outside of thier area. News flash, this won't save your failing communities anymore than a casino would. Thanks for trying to bring us all down with you, appreciate it.

The proposed station site is on the east side of Route 18, just south of Pearl Street.
I'm disappointed that the new site is 3/4 mile away from the downtown core, replacing the existing bus terminal which is right in the middle of town (where it should be). Walkability is the most important feature of transit service.
Rail/bus stations like the ones in Lowell and Plymouth are very inconvenient, because they're not an easy walk from downtown, and ruin what would otherwise be a good way for people to get to work and tourist destinations. I hope the New Bedford planners will rethink this station site.
