Snow removal is an essential transportation operation not just on Massachusetts roads and bridges and at Logan Airport.
MassDOT Aeronautics Administrator Christopher Willenborg reminds us that it is also an urgent matter at Commonwealth general aviation airports such as Westfield-Barnes Airport, with operations underway this morning, at left.
Westfield-Barnes Airport has more than three million square feet of pavement that must be cleared.
The airport snow removal team with the Air National Guard use 4 types of equipment: snow plows, airport sweepers, snow blowers, and ramp plows. Once the snow ends, it will take the airport snow removal team approximately three hours to complete the plowing of all paved surfaces.
