MassWorks Grant: Plympton Sysco Expansion

The Patrick-Murray Administration today announced a $922,620 MassWorks Infrastructure Program grant that will support the relocation of Sysco to a new, expanded facility in Plympton.

The Town of Plympton will use the state funds to make roadway improvements along Spring Street to facilitate Sysco’s move.  Sysco has already contributed $75,000 to the design of the improvements and is set to invest more than $100 million to complete its expansion. The company had searched for a new location, including several sites out of state, after determining that its existing facility in Norton was not suitable for expansion.

Construction on the road is scheduled to begin in spring 2011.  Sysco is expected to close on the property in April and begin private construction this spring.  This project will help create 75 new jobs, retain 852 existing jobs and leverage more than $100 million in private investment.


The Patrick-Murray Administration in 2010 launched the MassWorks Infrastructure Program as a one-stop shop for municipalities seeking public infrastructure funding.  The program consolidates six existing infrastructure programs, each aimed at supporting job creation and economic development, to provide increased efficiency, service, and communication when cities and towns apply for infrastructure grants and resources.  This approach has reduced duplication, improved accountability, and provided for the most effective management of state resources.

The MassWorks Infrastructure Program consolidates six grant programs:  Public Works Economic Development Grant (PWED), Community Development Action Grant (CDAG), Growth District Initiative (GDI) Grant, Massachusetts Opportunity Relocation and Expansion Program (MORE), Small Town Rural Assistance Program (STRAP) and the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Grant Program.
