Boston ranked number one among the 52 largest metropolitan areas for pedestrian safety, according to a "Pedestrian Danger Index" compiled by Transportation For America.
The Index considered average annual pedestrian fatality rate per 100,000 people for the years 2000-2009 along with the percentage of people who walk to work.
Boston had 483 pedestrian fatalities, or 1.1 fatalities per year per 100,000 people. A higher percentage of people walk to work in metro Boston, 5%, than in any other city except New York.
Promoting healthy and safe transportation including bicycles and walking is a MassDOT priority.
MassDOT's GreenDOT Policy has among its goals to promote the healthy transportation options of walking, bicycling, and public transit.
The Healthy Transportation Compact is a partnership among MassDOT and other state agencies charged among other things with increasing bicycle and pedestrian travel and effectively implementing a "complete streets" policy for all users consistent with MassDOT's award-winning Project Development and Design Guide.
