MassDOT reports the following state roadways in western Massachusetts and the Berkshires region remain closed as of midday Tuesday in the aftermath of Irene:
I-91 SB is closed between exits 26 and 24. Northbound is open. The detour is via Greenfield Rotary, Route 2A EB, River Road and Route 5 SB.
Route 5 in Northampton is closed due to the high water level. The detour is between exits 17 and 18 on I-91.
Route 8 from Jct Route 23 in Otis to the Ct State Line in Sandisfield remains closed. Utility work is complete and lane shifts are being set up.
Route 20 Becket at the junction of Route 8 Bonny Rigg to Chester Center is closed due to roadway and structure damage.
Route 8 Clarksburg from Henderson Road to the North Adams Town Line is closed.
Route 2 is now open from Buckland to Charlemont MM 27.45 and from North Adams MM 12.7 to Florida MM 21.6. From Charlemont MM 27.45 to Florida MM 21.6 is still closed indefinitely awaiting inspections and assessments.
Route 112 Buckland is closed between MM 36.4 and MM 38.2 -.
Route 112 Colrain is closed at MM 46.2 due to road failure.
Route 7A Ashley Falls at mm 1.5 was closed last night at approximately 9:00pm due to rising waters and remains closed.
Route 7 Sheffield from Lime Kiln road to the Sheffield Depot MM 7.0 now has water subsiding. The road is flooded, but passable at this time.

until 2nd May but I approached Devil's Bend from Chillwell Lane on 3rd May and it was still coesld. We have friends and family over lots from Derby and it is such a nightmare trying to direct and explain the diversion it takes 10 minutes now to get to the A52 instead of 2 minutes!

How much additional travel time should a driver budget for the present Route 2 detour? Greenfield to North Adams is normally a one-hour drive.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The detour is slightly more than 37 miles. While listed on popular web travel sites as slightly more than a 1 hour trip, local highway officials say the nature of those detour roadways is such that for drivers not accustomed to those roads, the 37 mile detour would take longer than 1 hour, depending on weather conditions and amount of traffic.

Seems like a good map. Why the state does not do this officially, I do not know / understand.

I need to travel on I-91 SB from VT back to CT on Sunday. I understand it's closed between exits 26 and 24. I see the detour routes...but I do not have a GPS. Are there more specific instructions on how to get back on to I-91? I am not familiar with MA roads at all. Thanks!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Those are the detour details. There is significant detour signage in that area, so follow those, be cautious, and you should get through that area successfully.

Are there detour signs posted to bypass the closed section of Rt 2?

Have you seen the google map of road closures for VT posted by Vermont Agency of Transportation? (find it at www.aot.state.vt.us Even with all the flooding, they took time to create this wonderful map. Why can't MA do the same?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
We have, thanks. Link below. Our road closure list of course is much shorter. Our thoughts are with Vermont residents.

Does anyone know if route 8 north from Winstead, CT to Becket is now passable (as of Thursday evening Sept 1)? The posting here is ambiguous.
Thanks
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Becket - Route 20 & 8 MM 27.7 (Rte 20) is open. Partial culvert failure leaves One lane closed indefinitely. Alternating one way traffic with temporary traffic signals.

Is Route 7 from the Exit on 90 in Lee north to the Vermont line open????
In western Vermont we are locked in and can not get east and people east can not get to us.

Open. yes.

Why is there no 511 map site showing where these closures are, only the Boston area? One map is better than hundreds of words!
Posted by: Sharron macklin | August 30, 2011 at 09:59 PM
this info should be on all town websites - had to do private search for highway info - very poor co-ordination between town and other sites like road closure sites. Deerfield town home page does not show things available from MA state gov. All this should be co-ordinated for emergencies with all town government. People in emergency situations should have access to all this without having to search many sites. - and what about old people, poor people, people without computers or having communications problems. I will work on this with my town government as a resident of South Deerfield. Also somewaht unclear info for example on rte 2 - is it open from Greenfield to Buckland or east past Charlemont. Please make notifications more clear such as beyond above info say rest of RTe 2 in MA is open - thank you for your consideration.

Would be great if someone could put this into a google map. Not sure where the mile markers and exits are or else I'd do it and post it. If you guys have the mile marker gps coordinates, it would only take a few minutes to make the map in google. Thanks!

Posted a Google map for the hardest hit areas today, thanks.

Is there a way to find exactly where these mile markers are? Without cross street information, all we can really do is guess where the closures are.
