MassDOT today became the first transportation agency in the nation recognized as a “Bicycle Friendly Business” by the League of American Bicyclists. The League today announced 67 awards nationally to businesses, cities, non-profits, and government agencies, including a Bronze medal to MassDOT for encouraging a bike-friendly atmosphere for customers and employees.
"We're proud to be the first DOT in the nation recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Business," said MassDOT Secretary Richard A. Davey. "MassDOT's core business is transportation and consistent with our 'Green DOT policy' we're committed to promoting bicycling as a healthy and efficient mode of travel."

As a Bicycle Friendly Business MassDOT is leading by example, providing travel options to employees and creating a workplace that supports healthy travel choices of walking, bicycling and transit to reduce congestion and greenhouse gases and create a healthier and more sustainable Commonwealth.
MassDOT has earned its Bronze medal through such initiatives as Bay State Bike Week, the only such week-long statewide bicycling education and awareness promotion in the nation. MassDOT has encouraged more bicycling by parking rack facilities at its Boston headquarters and making “pool” bikes available for employees to ride to a meeting or a worksite. Each MassDOT Highway Division District Office has designated a staff member as Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator.

the language in the Globe arictle was very misleading; as it turns out the $80m that the arictle mentioned has actually already been allocated long ago to the Big Dig.Apparently MA had the choice of allocating the funds to different priorities and the administration chose to dump it all into the Big Dig. Very disappointing, and unfortunately not much of a potential campaign it seems.
