MassDOT today announced a new telephone number for Registry of Motor Vehicles business and transactions, 857-DOT-8000/857-368-8000.
The number is live today and serves the RMV’s Call Center which answers an average of 45,000 calls each month.
“The Call Center is one part of our customer-service oriented operation and serves a population accustomed to receiving assistance and performing transactions with a helpful voice on the other end of the line,” said Registrar of Motor Vehicles Rachel Kaprielian.
Over the next year, customers will become familiar with the 857-DOT area code and exchange as MassDOT offices across the Commonwealth transition to the new number. The telephone transition will result in annual phone bill and maintenance savings of approximately $422,000.
“Transportation Reform continues with 857-DOT,” said MassDOT Secretary and CEO Richard A. Davey. “We are replacing the antiqued and redundant telecom systems of the RMV, Turnpike, MassHighway and Executive Office of Transportation to realize significant savings and improve customer service.”
The RMV’s new telephone number, 857-DOT-8000 is being advertised inside Registry branches, on the MBTA system and through the Highway Division’s digital billboard PSA program throughout the month of August.
In addition, more than two dozen RMV transactions may be performed online at mass.gov/RMV.

Got a citation in July. I live out of state. Put my ticket with court hearing request in envelope and sent in. Have had nothing come to my house about anything. I can't get anyone on the phone to help me out. I even went as far as contacting lawyers in Mass and they do nothing to help. This is a joke! And watch ill get late fees taxes and penalties and my license revoked because YOUR system doesn't work.

Thank you for your comments, which have been forwarded to the RMV.

no one answers EVER! I have been on hold for over 2 hours today alone. This was over 4 different attempts to call at various times in the day. This telephone service is obviously non-existent. It's a complete sham.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RMV apologizes for the wait. The number of customers in person and via phone are especially high on the day after a holiday such as Veteran's Day.

I am unable to reach a representative any time I call. No one ever answers the phone and I am left on hold interminably.

If you have an unresolved issue, please let us know and will forward. Thank you.

Customer Service at the RMV is non-existant. Doesn't matter what the number is.

All I had was a simple question on how to obtain a replacement plate. The phone system sends you to a form section that refers you back to the DOT site. The cost is $10.00 I found out but nothing how to obtain or a form so does that mean I have to visit a RMV location to obtain a replacement plate??
-------------------------------------------------------------------
If you need to order a normal plate, go to the branch or call the phone center 857-368-8000. If you need a replacement vanity plate or special plate, they can also call the Special Plates Dept. 857-368-8031.

The RMV Contact Us page (http://www.mass.gov/rmv/feedback/index.htm) shows two telephone numbers, depending on area code:
"To reach the Telephone Center, you can call one of the following two numbers, depending on where you are located:
857-368-8000
•From Massachusetts area codes 339/617/781/857
•From outside of Massachusetts
800-858-3926
•From all other Massachusetts area codes not listed above"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Correct. The 800 number is for MA residents who live outside of the four area codes listed. The 857 number is for residents within those four and calls from outside of MA.

But with today's call forwarding and number portability technology, why does system consolidation require a change of phone number?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Separate systems had separate numbers, now all to be consolidated into one prefix. All calls will be forwarded during the transition.

http://www.mass.gov/rmv/info/phone.htm says the existing toll-free number, 800-858-3926, is still valid from Massachusetts area codes other than 339/617/781/857.
Why does 617-351-4500 cost $422,000 more than 857-368-8000?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
New phone savings result from internal system consolidation efficiencies, thanks.
