MassDOT in conjunction with the MBTA and the City of Boston is launching the South Station Expansion Project.
Using funds awarded by the federal government, MassDOT will spend the next several years performing planning, environmental review, and preliminary design for an expanded station and ancillary facilities.
Among other project elements, the South Station Expansion project will analyze the options for expanding the rail tracks, expanding and improving passenger amenities, improving the existing streetscape and urban design (including a new segment of the Boston Harborwalk along Dorchester Avenue), and siting a new daytime rail vehicle storage facility. MassDOT is working closely with the U.S. Postal Service on issues related to the U.S.P.S. facility on Dorchester Avenue.
