The Union Street Bridge over the Merrimack River in Lawrence, known as the Duck Bridge, reopened to traffic today.
The $16 million MassDOT project reconstructed existing bridge piers and abutments, repaired bridge truss members, and constructed a new concrete and steel bridge deck.
The new bridge provides two travel lanes, with sidewalks on both sides of the bridge.
The bridge was closed to traffic in July 2010 with detours in place.
The federally funded project was constructed by S&R Corporation from Lowell and completed four months ahead of schedule.
MassDOT appreciates the patience shown by drivers and abutters affected by the closure and the associated traffic detour during construction.
