The funds will go toward reconstruction of the intersection of Spofford Street, Merrimac Street, and Moseley Avenue. The intersection will be rebuilt into a single-lane roundabout that will make improvements to safety and to traffic flow.
“Under the leadership of the Patrick-Murray Administration, we are making it a priority to invest in transportation improvements that have positive effects on economic growth, and increase mobility and safety, no matter how big, or how small they are,” Secretary Davey said.
The city is overseeing the project, with construction expected to begin in April 2013 and completion in spring 2014.
The Small Bottleneck Grant Program provides communities with both funding and technical assistance to complete roadway improvement projects valued at or about $1 million that do not score high enough to qualify for federal funding but improve the local economy, quality of life, safety and commute times.
This program supports MassDOT’s commitment to both small and large investments that help leverage economic development and jobs. In the first year, Sandwich, Fitchburg, and Westhampton also received Small Bottleneck Grants.
