The award-winning success of the Patrick-Murray Administration's Accelerated Bridge Program has paid off for nine Commonwealth college students.
The students received scholarships made possible when MassDOT's Accelerated Bridge Program received AASHTO's 2011 Francis B. Francois Award for Innovation.
MassDOT in winning the award received $10,000 for graduate fellowships to students attending a state university pursuing a transportation-related degree.
A scholarship contest asked applicants to propose an innovative solution to a current civil engineering problem. A total of nine students were chosen to receive to receive a scholarship.
Noah Woldermariam, UMass Lowell postgraduate student, above with MassDOT Secretary Richard Davey and MassDOT Board Chair John Jenkins, suggested using Wireless Sensor Networks to monitor bridge structural health. Noah received a $2,000 scholarship for his idea.
Eight other students each received a $1,000 scholarship, including:
Radhameris Gomez, Chaoqun Jia, Yue Tang, Ian McKinnin, Eric Mistretta, Eric Riese, Timothy Horan, and Sushma Srinivas. Among the other winning applications: using ground penetrating radar to inspect bridge decks; improving traffic flow at rotaries and circles; and improving evacuation strategies in urban areas with nuclear power plants.
