MassDOT’s Registrar of Motor Vehicles Rachel Kaprielian today announced the last days of 2012 will bring year-end long lines at RMV branches caused by a stream of commercial motor vehicle registration renewals.
Owners of commercial vehicles will be appearing in person through Monday, December 31 to conduct their renewals and payments.
50,000+ customers visited Customers Service Representatives last week and wait times approached a statewide average of 15 minutes. Wait times are expected to grow with only 2 full business days until 2013. RMV branches will be open on Monday, December 31 but closed on January 1, 2013. You may check current RMV wait times in your coverage area on the RMV website.
“While commercial registration customers must visit a branch before the end of the year, there are many other customers who can choose the online option and avoid the wait times all together,” said Registrar Kaprielian.
This month, for example, 54,724 customers up for license renewal are eligible to perform their renewal online. Hundreds of thousands of customers perform online transactions- more than 370,000 transactions were completed online in October 2012 alone.
Among the transactions that may be performed online:
Change of Address
Court Filing Fee
Citation Payment
Crash Report
Driving Record
Duplicate ID
Duplicate License
Duplicate Title
Duplicate Registration
License Renewal
Organ Donor
Plate Return on Web
Registration Inquiry
Renew Mass ID
Special Plate

Maybe it's time to change commercial expirations, so they're spread throughout the year instead of just December.
